Mytilene, the capital of Lesvos, holds a rich historical and cultural heritage dating back to ancient times. According to Herodotus, the town of Mytilene was founded around 1053 BCE, approximately 130 years after the conquest of Troy, making it one of the ancient settlements in the region. During the 7th and 6th centuries BCE, Mytilene flourished, becoming a center of intellectual and artistic development, with notable figures, such as the philosopher Pittakos and poets Alkeos and Sappho, contributing to its prestige.

The name “Mytilene” is said to have been derived from one of the daughters of Makaras, the island’s first colonist, adding a touch of mythology to the city’s origin story.

Presently, the Municipality of Mytilene encompasses several villages, including Agia Marina, Taxiarches, Loutra, Panagiouda, Moria, Alyfanta, Afalonas, Pamphila, and the city itself, totaling around 25,000 inhabitants. The town’s architecture showcases impressive neo-classical buildings, coexisting with historical monuments and archaeological treasures that reflect its vibrant past.

The heart of Mytilene comprises three main areas: Kioski, a beautiful suburb, the central old neighborhoods, and the western neighborhoods. The authorities have undertaken commendable efforts to reconstruct and modernize the town center, harmonizing the needs of the Municipality of Mytilene with the demands of the 21st century.

Kioski, once an aristocratic suburb of Mytilene, houses the new Archaeological Museum and holds authentic mansions reflecting traditional Lesbian architecture. Nearby stands the Enetic Castle, situated on an isolated part of Mytilene, seemingly like a small island due to the channel of Euripus. The channel of Euripus, which had bridges in the past, divided Mytilene into two parts, connecting the southern port to the north port. Today, visitors can explore ruins, ancient structures, and the entrance of the mentioned channel, providing a glimpse into the town’s historical significance.
